Things to Know Before Starting a Tech Blog

Tech is the most popular niche, blogging startups choose nowadays.

What niche will you choose for your new blog? 60% of the times the answer would be “tech”. People who are a little tech savvies, straightaway starts a new tech blog. That’s not a daunting task.

Tech is an ever-growing niche, big tech giants uncover new technologies, bloggers and people go bonkers about them. More and more people are in need of new tech tutorials, guides and how to properly implement tech in daily life.

With the prevalence of mobile devices and OSs, especially Android (the future), more and more people are coming online. They are in need of good tech tutorials.

Now you felt the urge to start out a new tech blog NOW, right away (if you do not have one).

But, wait.

I will tell you some things you need to consider before starting your general tech blog.

The things I mention here applies only to GENERAL tech blogs. Tech–a broad niche.

#1. Tech blog needs frequent updation

Broader the niche goes, more the frequency of updation is required.

Tech is a broad niche. It needs frequent updation.

If you cover the latest tech news, you need to update your blog twice or thrice a day. You have to be one of the earliest ones to cover the news. You may end up having no time for other things, recreational stuff or interacting with your social life. You may even end up being in front on your computer all day long. Things seem to be interesting initially. Here’s where passion comes into action. Without being tech-news hungry man, you can’t sustain your tech blog.

If you are planning to cover the entire tech from programming to Android, you need at least a post a day for your tech blog to succeed.

If you cover only things like Android, iOS and Windows, 2-3 posts a week will be enough.

If you again choose a specific niche for your tech blog, say, Android. You may require 2 posts a week. That sounds a great deal to me.

#2. You need to be well informed of the new trends

In Order to drive massive referral traffic and get good organic rankings, you need to cover the latest trends on your blog. You should be the Earlybird informer.

When a new tech is introduced initially, there will be no competition. You could easily rank for the keywords.
Coming to Google, it indexes your blog post higher. Because it has got no other content on the same to rank.

When more people are unaware of the new thing, more people click on your blog posts. It leads to more referral traffic.

So the fresh-unique content works great to drive traffic that converts to income.

For this, you need to well informed about what’s trending.

Now, the Android, wearables and app development are trending. They are the future.

#3. Tech blog needs massive traffic for decent earnings

Tech blogs receive traffic greater than any affiliate or niche sites, easily. But, more traffic is still less, as far as tech blogs are concerned. Because, Tech bloggers mainly depend on Adsense for revenue.

For tech niche depending on the keywords, Adsense offers CPC anywhere around $0.1 to $0.5. The average CTR ranges from 1% to 7% today for tech blogs. However, most of the blogs get around 2%-3%. The Adsense CPC and CTR for tech blogs have fallen drastically from 2 years (may be due to the prevalence of Android apps with Adsense ads).

Although driving some decent traffic to tech blogs is easier, you will not earn decent money if the Adsense CTR and CPC are low.

Assuming that your CPC is $0.15, and CTR is 3%, you can hardly get anywhere around $4 to $4.5 for every 1k visitors. Which is something low.

You can clearly see that your revenue depends upon the traffic you drive.

Note: People are becoming more and more aware about not to click on ads. Common people daily come across ads on their mobile phones, while surfing. So, they’ll be sure how AdSense ads look like.

#4. Keyword research is damn important

I would suggest you to start a tech blog only if you are strong at keyword research, especially long tail one.

Simply writing some blog posts and expecting organic traffic to flow may be a bad idea.

All the blog posts you write should be about a specific idea. They should have the potential to rank for a specific keyword. Target keywords that have high CPC. It helps you earn some decent Adsense revenue.

You can easily find out the best keywords that have high Adsense CPC using SEMrush .

If your content ranks for the keywords that have high CPC, expect a huge spike in your Adsense charts.

I would say that for high CPC keywords would be difficult as there will be high competition. So, initially try to rank for high volume keywords.

#5. About time

Tech blog needs TIME to show results. As it is directly dependent on traffic and clicks for revenue, good organic traffic is required.

For this, frequent updation is required.

You should drive good traffic; especially organic. You need to work hard and get authority for your blog.

If you are a hobby or a part-time blogger, I advise you to handle only your one tech blog.

If you already have one or more blogs, I advise you to stay away from starting a general tech blog, that demands content updation.

You may end up having no time for your other blogs or daily life.

Compared to this, you could get quick results with less efforts on niche blogs.

Blogging is not only about churning out posts. The main thing you need to do is promotion and SEO. Keep that in mind.

Finally…

If you’re a full-time blogger, starting a Tech blog may not be a problem for you. Because you can drive great results out of your blog, as you have got time.

If you’re a part-time blogger, if you have at least 2 hours a day for blogging, with no other blogs, then you may consider starting a Tech blog.

Having 2-3 hours a day for blogging and planning to manage multiple blogs, along with tech blog, may be a bad idea.

So I would suggest that, if you are not willing to put daily efforts, it’s good to start a niche site and work towards it. When you concentrate on a particular niche, you will likely come up with unique ideas. Your focus should be streamlined.

Rather than starting another general tech blog, start a blog about a particular tech niche.
